Water – How Much?
Hey San Antonio,
Few things will make as big a difference in the way one feels than actually being hydrated. Of course, the body is more than two-thirds water, and the slightest bit of dehydration affects us in several ways. Simply replacing soda and juice intake alone is a great way to begin a fat loss program just because you’re eliminating extra calories. But how much water should you consume?
Let’s look at a few things that drinking water will immediately provide:
-Eliminate dehydration (most mid and late day fatigue is due to dehydration)
-A “full” feeling. Drink more water, eat less food.
-Reduce water retention. Yes, you read that write – drinking water tells your body that it’s ok to release excess water because more is being regularly provided. So for you that are obsessed with scale numbers, reducing water retention will help you drop a few pounds on the scale. (Note: this is not physique transforming weight…)
The biggest complaint I hear from people that drastically increase their water consumption is that they spend too much time in the bathroom. This isn’t a bad thing – it’s a simple flushing process by which your body is eliminating excess chemicals and materials that it needs to get rid of. After a couple of weeks, your trips to the bathroom come back to normal.
So, how much? Well, instead of putting an ounce-value on how much, I prefer to have clients drinking it regularly throughout the day. If you drink caffeine containing drinks, water becomes more important due to their diuretic effects. No, you don’t count the water in coffee or tea as water consumed.
If you’re one of those people that must have a numerical value, I’d say at between .75 and 1 ounce per pound of bodyweight, but it is extremely important to realize that drinking must be kept consistent throughout the day, and only tapered off as bedtime approaches (to keep you out of the bathroom at night). Don’t completely eliminate it, just reduce it. Don’t try to drink all of your water before noon and then forget about it. Hydration is an all day procedure, and “pre-loading” it during a couple of hours isn’t going to set you up all day.
Water eliminates waste, ensures optical function of organs and keeps our bodies running the way they should. This is the simplest of items to implement with a healthy lifestyle, and is the first thing I request of my clients. Few things have such a drastic effect on fat loss, overall mood, performance and health.
