Sunday in San Antonio
Hey San Antonio,
I’ve had an amazing day. One I needed. One to SMILE about. It is a zero carb day that started off with cardio (I’m prepping, so don’t do this for the hell of it), but it hasn’t been as mentally strenuous as I thought it was going to be. It was just one of those days that I needed.
I had intended on posting all weekend long, but my UVerse went out on Friday and I’m using my cellular wireless on my little laptop (that has VERY small buttons, so it’s tough to type). I have a lot to discuss about fat loss and body transformation, so as soon as I get this issue with UVerse fixed, I’ll be all over it.
I hope everyone’s had a great weekend! Tomorrow’s Monday. If you don’t have the “get in shape” fever due to the weather, then check your pulse! Look good, feel better, live longer without pain! That IS what I offer…

Client of the Week – May 29, 2009
Hey San Antonio!
This was one of the hardest weeks to choose because all of the clients at my personal training studio are tearing it up – losing fat and changing their bodies. I mean, I could choose from one of the 75 current clients we have and I don’t think I’d be making a bad choice. This one is a multi-time winner!
Congrats to Courtney for kicking ASS! Aside from making amazing physical progress, her attitude has changed 10,000% and all this is happening WHILE overcoming personal adversity…
So, great job Courtney, I’m EXTREMELY proud of you! (Plus, she kicked my ass today in a workout :D)

Thursday Personal Trainer Musings…
Hey San Antonio,
WELCOME BACK! Of course I missed you. ;)
While I was at the store yesterday buying protein, I had a talk yesterday with a gentleman who told me he wanted to look good for the summer and was asking me what supplements he should start taking and asked what I take (I had just worked out and was in shorts and a tank top). He understood that he would be cutting it close, but was willing to do anything to burn a little fat and lean up for days at the lake, pool or one of the gorgeous rivers here in the region.
I guess I was just in one of my talkative moods, and I gave him an abbreviated, Cliff Notes version of what he should start doing right now. I mean, I was giving him FREE advice that people pay me for. I flat out told him carb consumption is for breakfast, pre and post-workout. Cardio in the morning on an empty stomach (hydrated of course) intensely 3-4 days per week, workout with purpose, and I mean, look to get stronger at something each and every workout, cut out junk food, eat regular protein centered meals, replace carbs with healthy fats and fibrous veggies after 5pm (was being really general here) and stay committed.
Look, this is standing in HEB (it was on the way home, I’d NEVER buy protein there if I wasn’t in a terrible rush but I was out at home and didn’t have time to go to Alamo City Sports Nutrition – trust me, their selection is much better). I am asked questions like this all the time. Hell, every single day. But this time, I answered it.
How did he react? With excuses. He started telling me about his job, his kids, his wife, his eating habits, how he HAS to go to dinners where drinking is involved and how he doesn’t have time to get to the gym, and “what if I just did this…” If you JUST do whatever, you’ll get those kind of results.
Improving your body is not easy. Hell, maintaining it isn’t a breeze either and both require tremendous amounts of discipline. The things I ask of clients aren’t what you’ll read in bodybuilding magazines and garbage message boards – I give them sustainable objectives that they can implement in their lifestyle IF they really make the decision that they want to live with a healthier body. It’s not just my job to improve you while you are a client, but to give you the tools you need to continuously make progress when our training time is up.
No excuses, no crutches, no bs. Either you want it or you don’t. You cannot have it both ways… I think you know deep down in your heart which is the better, more rewarding way to live – SO DO IT!

Busy, Busy, Busy Personal Trainer
Hey San Antonio,
Killin’ It! So much going on here! This is a very busy season for me and my personal trainers. On top of that, I’m getting ready for an event in 11 days, so it’s lots of lifting, dieting and 2-a-day cardio sessions.
Cardio? Blah! But it is a necessity… I’ll talk more about that later.
I’m about to hit a full body workout. A very intense full body workout at that. Follow that up with my last carb meal of the day and then another cardio session later this afternoon.
Looked like rain earlier. I’d love to go run the stadium stairs, but I don’t want to waste a drive and not be able to get my workout in if the metal stairs are slick.
Updates on training and nutrition ARE coming – sorry for the shorter posts, but I’ve been so busy. Keeping this blog up to date is a huge priority for me, and I have plenty to write about.

I’ll post more later – thanks for the twitter adds!

Greatest Testimonial Ever
Hey San Antonio,
I hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day. Mine was great until I left the doors and top off my new Jeep. Haha, you know where that’s going (lots of water).
This is a testimonial I received from a client via email and it’s absolutely amazing. I can’t say enough about her work ethic and how much effort she has put into her program, but I do want to say that I’m so very proud of her!!!
Epiphany! I was just at the gym for a swim and my bathing suit is too big. The bathing suit that I bought two weeks ago is too big on me! Of course, it’s still wearable (although, I do have to be extremely aware of its placement..), but this was my big “a-ha” moment. It made me step back and take a look at where I am today compared to six weeks ago. Just thought I would share a few things with you:
Six weeks ago, I wouldn’t have been caught dead in a bathing suit in public. Today, I consider myself a swimmer and can do 25 laps (50 lengths) non-stop, at the public gym!
Six weeks ago, I felt uncomfortable showing my arms in my own house! Today, I wore a tank top out to lunch and felt good about it.
Six weeks ago, I thought I was always going to feel sluggish, tired and way too old for my age. Today, I feel young, healthy, and energized!
Six weeks ago, when a friend told me she lost six pounds at the start of her new cardio program, I would have said, “That’s great!” and meant it. Today, when a friend told me she lost six pounds, I thought to myself, “Too bad, there goes six pounds of necessary muscle…”
Six weeks ago, I thought of my body as something I just had to deal with. Now, I look at my body as something I want to nurture, nourish, and care for.
Six weeks ago, I was unhappy. Today, I feel worthy of being happy because I am taking care of myself and it shows.
I am so glad that I took the steps I did to end up as your client, because it has totally changed my life. You are a wealth of knowledge and value, and you will never know how deeply I respect the fact that you have chosen to dedicate your career to passing that onto others.
Eternally grateful,
Courtney

Happy Memorial Day Weekend, San Antonio!
Sorry for the lack of updates, but I’m out of town enjoying the holiday weekend with water, sun, sleep, and my son (whom I love more than life). It’s been a great weekend so far for us, and a client and really good friend took my son to Chuck E. Cheese for games on Friday – and it wasn’t even his birthday! (He’s standing beside me in his swimming trunks with his little belly out telling me about it, and he told me I should write about it. He’s the boss.)
I wanted to type this on Friday but I rushed out of town. Anyway, congrats to Christina and Gilbert (this week’s clients of the week). I know, every week it’s a different Christina, and this is yet another one, and this is her first time on the list! ;) One of the 40 I think I train. Great thing is that it’s a very easy name to remember. Sad thing is I don’t know what to do with myself when it’s not actually the client’s name. Haha
These two train together with me three times per week, and it is hardcore from the second they walk in until the second they leave. In 17 days, her bodyfat dropped 5 percentage points, while his dropped over 4. Both waists dropped upwards of three inches during the same time. Both have gained lean body mass and their changes are already visible to me and my trainers. These aren’t clinically obese people, so what they’ve accomplished in under 3 weeks is absolutely amazing. The crazy thing is that they both want to go even harder and more than duplicate those results in a shorter amount of time.
Congrats guys – it’s a pleasure training you both!

Healthy Low-Fat Recipe For Today
Hey San Antonio,
A client just sent me this and it sounds amazing, so I decided to pass it on here on the blog. I’m not a big pork eater, but this one may be worth a try!
Grilled Pork Tenderloin with Napa Cabbage Sesame Slaw
Ingredients:
Pork Tenderloins
Olive oil (not extra virgin)
Salt
Fresh Ground Pepper
Method:
1. Preheat grill med/high or preheat oven to 400 degrees.
2. Rub tenderloins with olive oil, salt and pepper liberally all over the outside on all sides.
3. Grill or Roast for about 18-20 minutes. It takes about 12-15 minutes per pound and most tenderloins weigh a little over a pound, so they don’t take long to cook.
4. Let the tenderloins REST without touching them for at least 10-15 minutes after cooking. This will insure that they stay juicy and continue to cook for a few minutes after pulling them off the grill or out of the oven.
Per ounce of pork tenderloin:
Calories 48
Fat 2 g
Carbohydrates 0g
Protein 8 g
Napa Cabbage Sesame Slaw
Makes 8 portions
Ingredients:
1 head Napa (Chinese) cabbage
1 yellow pepper
1 red pepper
1 red onion
1 bunch cilantro
Juice and zest of 1 lime or lemon
3 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
1 Tbsp. toasted sesame oil
Salt and fresh ground pepper to taste
Method:
1. Cut cabbage in half length wise. Cut out core. Slice into small strips cross ways.
Place in large bowl.
2. Cut out stem and seeds from peppers and cut into strips.
3. Cut onion into strips.
4. Make dressing in separate bowl or small food processor by squeezing lime or lemon, salt and pepper and zest, and slowly adding oils to the juice.
5. Chop cilantro lightly and add to vegetables.
6. Leave the veggies separate from the dressing in a zip lock container in the fridge (they will stay nice for up to a week). Right before eating (or 1/2 hour before eating) toss the veggies with a little bit of the dressing to keep them crispy and fresh. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
Per portion:
Calories 107
Fat 7g
Protein 2g
Carbohydrates 11g
Dietary Fiber 3.5g
To Serve:
Allow the tenderloins to rest while you toss the slaw with the dressing.
Place a large scoop of the Napa slaw on the plate, then top with a few slices of the pork tenderloin. Garnish with fresh cilantro and a slice of lime if desired.

Health, Even When Things Don’t Go As Planned…
Hey San Antonio,
I hope everyone had a great last few days. My last few days have been adventurous, challenging, and exhausting but I survived and things are now slowly returning back to normal here on Monday.
I discuss the benefits of exercise often here on the Personal Trainer in San Antonio blog. Life isn’t easy – there are daily challenges of career and family, and balancing other obligations. Those things aren’t easy. While those things are tough, what happens when sickness strikes? What happens when a car runs a red light and puts you in a hospital bed? What happens when a crazy virus or bacteria (swine flu, anyone?) hits and your body starts deteriorating? What happens when within a few days you go from being absolutely fine to this condition:

Me, and this picture still makes me a little sick to see it.
I’m not trying to scare anyone, but be prepared. If you’re healthy and in good condition, your chances of recovery and a quick recovery are exponentially increased. When you exercise, you improve every aspect of your body, including the recovery systems. It’s impossible to predict health issues, but the best way to be prepared is to be healthy – don’t put off exercise until you perceive you need it.
Love life, live it to the fullest, and make your body prepared for most anything.
