2012 NPC Optimum Fitness Pro/Am Figure Championships – Client’s First Comp and Win!
Hey everyone,
On May 14, my client Chelsey Young competed in her first NPC Figure Show, the Optimum Fitness Classic in Shreveport, LA. When I first met Chelsey, I knew that she had the potential to do really well at absolutely any level. After a brief discussion, we decided on the show she was going to compete and the work began.
Then, twelve weeks later, she was on stage for the first time:
Due to luck of the draw, Chelsey ended up in the middle. During a Figure Competition, they do what is known as “Call outs” and bring the top competitors to the middle initially and compare them against the others. Chelsey stayed front and center, and they moved girls around her. As soon as I saw her against her competitors, I knew that we were going to place well, and it’d be a travesty if she didn’t win her class.
Here are pics of her next to the girl that would be the eventual class runner up:
At the end, I had little doubt – I actually posted “CHELSEY WINS OVERALL” on Twitter and Facebook before the official announcement (and showed her husband as I was doing it.
Chelsey’s next show is the Europa Pro/Am in Dallas on August 17/18 and is a national qualifier (which will enable her to compete for her IFBB Pro Card). I have a lot of confidence that she will do well and I feel like she will be very tough to beat. Actually, I’ll say it: I expect nothing less than victory.
Chelsey, I’m extremely proud of you – few people have the dedication and the work ethic that you do, and your focus is extremely evident. You are an inspiration and a role model for everyone you come in contact with!
I’m extremely honored to have the opportunity to work with you!

San Antonio Personal Trainer Blog Updated!
Hey everyone,
I finally got around to updating the blog to the most current software – I wanted to months ago, but my webhosting provider wouldn’t allow an update to the most current database version (techie stuff). Anyway, it is all done now – I was having many issues with losing drafts and posts, but that seems to be cleared up now and I’ll be able to get back to my regular posting habits without becoming insanely annoyed everytime I try to do it!
If you have any problems (reading, commenting, etc) please don’t hesitate to let me know!!!
Thanks everyone!

Personal Trainers in San Antonio – Why Private?
During a discussion with a client this morning, she told me that someone had asked her how working out with her personal trainer was going. She explained how she told them how I am quite different from other personal trainers she has had in the past at big gyms, and how much more she enjoys working out at my private training studio versus working out in the big box fitness centers.
Mission Accomplished, sort of…
I have made no bones about saying this: I am San Antonio’s foremost expert on fitness training and performance nutrition. My track record of client success, whether it is simple fat loss, sports performance, figure/fitness/bikini/bodybuilding prep, injury recovery and everything in between is unequaled in this community.
I opened Personal Fitness Revolution in 2006 for several reasons:
-Professional. I was tired of seeing personal trainers in San Antonio (and everywhere else, for that matter), train their clients incorrectly. I have 15 years of personal training experience, hold advanced degrees, and have worked with over 2000 clients that range from housewives to professional athletes. Most personal trainers are in the career field for less than one year – it is definitely a field that defines “survival of the fittest”.
-I hated the idea of anything being before progress and client success. At the large gyms, there is one concern: Sales, sales, sales. Sell them the nutrition package. Get them to sign up for a year in advance. Sell this, sell that.
-Gyms are meat-markets and social clubs, and to many, they are overwhelming. I wanted a private environment with the real essentials, without the distractions of morons posing in the mirror and the dangers of people practicing their “stunts” in the corner, putting everyone within 100 feet in danger.
-Put the “personal” in personal training. Every individual is different. I do not train any two individuals identically, because no two people are identical. Most trainers are what I call “fad” trainers, and do what the newest craze is – to hell with it actually working, it gives them the chance to “seem” cutting edge. Nothing I do is cookie cutter. What my clients do depends on a) their condition and b) improving weaknesses while maintaining strengths, and c) their goals. Not what I saw in a book or what the CrossFit studio down the street is doing (incorrectly).
-Privacy. Never more than 2-4 people training at one time. No crowds, no waits.
-No memberships. We work by appointment only, and clients get the sessions they pay for. No time limits, no hidden monthly charges.
-Holistic approach. Simple diet and exercise are do not guarantee success; rather, one must integrate a synchronized and synergistic diet and exercise program that is focused completely on one’s needs and condition.
When people call me or email me looking for the cheapest trainer, I’m not going to be that person. There is a difference between a typical personal trainer and a professional – if you’re looking for a rep counter with less than a year experience, you’ll definitely get what you pay for at other gyms, and I take it personal when people believe that all personal trainers are like the ones you see at the big gyms. When you’re ready for the best and you are serious about your goals, that is when you call me.

Urgent Notice (To All Clients, Present and Future)!
Hey San Antonio,
Couple of quick things on this rainy Monday (no, really – it has rained in San Antonio):

These things are intense, and I’ll be posting a video later this week!
2. Remember, I do not typically wear a mustache, but it is Mo-vember, and for prostate cancer awareness, I have dedicated my face to growing a mustache to raise money to defeat prostate cancer! For more information and to donate (any little bit helps), and to see my crazy mustache, check out: Boyd’s Mo-Space – Defeat Prostate Cancer

Cross Training – Get Fit San Antonio!
Hey San Antonio,
Just a quick snippet we took about 40 minutes into my client Joey’s workout. Joey is a martial artist and while we often train for strength, this workout was totally circuit and cross training, where we worked with the TRX Suspension System, Kettle Bells, and the ab wheel of torture.
There is no one way to skin a cat, you just have to work hard and have the proper plan of attack (like Joey) – here is about 5% of his entire workout:
All tools are on the table in my personal training studio, whether it is power lifting, Olympic weight lifting, cross training, Russian Kettle Bells or whatever it takes. No training studio has a more complete view of training than mine, I assure you.
KICK BUTT!

THE Personal Trainer – San Antonio!
Elite Conditioning – More Than One Way
Hey San Antonio,
I think the biggest downfall of most personal trainers is that most have tunnel vision. They know of one way to obtain a certain result and rarely deviate from their method.
Of course, that works great IF that is what the client needs. They fail to diagnose each client, their condition and needs and figure out the optimal way to get them from point A to point B. They fail to understand that one size doesn’t fit all. The only difference in their workouts from client to client is the difference in resistance.
I have many different clients with many different needs. I train normal people for typical fat loss. I train marathon runners. I train fitness competitors and bodybuilders. I train professional athletes at different times of the year where their needs are completely different. I have a client training for 21,000 feet climbs in Ecuador. I have clients doing Olympic lifts and sprints, others training circuit style, some powerlifting, others doing TRX bands, boxing training and kettle bells and many that do every bit of that or absolutely none of it.
The approaches to training I use are as different as my various clients are.
I don’t change things up just for the hell of it. While keeping the workouts interesting and challenging are both keys to keeping a client not only engaged, but providing overload, I’m not a fad chaser that sees something new and starts training every client in my new “passion” (note: if you are around personal trainers for any amount of time you will realize that most of them do this, find a new “style” and change as often as the weather).
Training should be based off of science. There is and never will be a one size fits all approach to training, and “scalable” means more by having someone perform a workout at a slower rate or using lighter resistance (re-read that, CrossFit cult members).
As long as the barrier to entry to becoming a personal trainer is extremely low, there will be these types of trainers that throw the proverbial crap on the wall to see what sticks, so be careful who and what training system you waste your time and money on.

Personal Trainer In SA Q&A
Hey everyone,
I have been getting a lot of good questions here of late, so I thought I would do a quick Q&A!
Hey Boyd, Sorry about your pig… I know how they can become so important to us. Anyway, I feel like a pig now. I want to go all out and get my diet back in order. Any boot camp style eating tips you care to give?
Thank you for that. I miss him terribly, but I am getting another one very soon :).
While variety is the spice of life, when I need to get insanely serious, I try to limit myself drastically – I choose 4 lean meats, 4 clean, low glycemic carbs, load up on the green veggies and go from there for 2 weeks. Sure, it is tough, but I believe in challenging myself and I go ultra strict with no deviation. I pre-cook a few days worth of food, grab and go, leaving nothing to chance by having someone else prepare food. After two weeks of perfect eating, it always seems much easier to keep things tight, and the synergy of hard training and great eating really changes the body drastically.
The key is to eat enough: most people induce starvation when they try to eat clean because they simply do not eat enough. Two weeks is NOTHING – start today!!!
How is the benching?
Better than ever. Well on my way to a personal record (665 current) – I have no doubt that 14 plates (7 on each side of the bar) is coming down soon!!!
Boyd, have you ever considered opening a CrossFit studio?
Kay, you must be new to the blog ;) While I am for people doing anything versus doing nothing, I simply believe CrossFit SUCKS (I don’t mince words). No bench pressing, poor supervision, lack of proper program design, periodization, poor exercise order, etc, etc, etc. You cannot be a master of all at once. Hell, start here and you will see why I feel the way I do – welcome to the Personal Trainer in San Antonio Blog!
Hey Boyd, I have a question – I have read in your blog that you hate chicken. I do too, but not for the reasons I think you do. You see, when I eat it, it feels like it sits like a brick in my stomach. Not sure why, but I just don’t think I digest it well. I do not have this problem with red meat, oddly. Thoughts?
Actually, that is exactly why I do not eat chicken! Everyone has foods that their body simply has trouble absorbing. I have had this doctor diagnosed: my body has trouble breaking down chicken. It isn’t common, and most people have a much harder time with red meat, but if I eat 3oz of chicken, I feel like I have eaten a pound of concrete.
The key to health is digestion. Each of us has foods that work better with us for energy, absorption and assimilation, and we are all mutually exclusive. This is another reason why I like to suggest a food journal. Not just list what I eat, but to also document how I feel at certain times, how my gym performance is affected, etc – I don’t always suggest keeping such a journal 365 days per year, but for a short amount of time to see how you are responding to different types of food.
Remember: Texas is in a lot of trouble right now with wildfires, so keep the people that are being affected in your thoughts and prayers.
Keep the questions coming – YOU are the reason I keep this blog!

San Antonio Personal Trainer Musings
Hey San Antonio,
I had a very nice and relaxing weekend getaway, and absolutely needed it to recharge and recover with friends – very relaxing and fun!
Today was the first day of first grade for my little boy, Peyton. I handled it a lot better than I handled the first day of Kindergarten. I sat and had breakfast with him at his school’s cafeteria and it is crazy to think that there are only a handful of “first days of school” in a child’s life!
I have to admit that I was disturbed that his new “healthier” meal served by the school included a carb (french toast) and a protein (a fried chicken patty) and both orange juice and milk. Not sure who in the hell determines what a healthy school lunch is, but I am guessing the government does not have a clue (hey, look at half of congress, they sure don’t know haha).
Big kudos to my client and good friend Nick Novak – Nick is the Kicker for the New York Jets. He is absolutely “kicking” butt in training camp, and I will be very shocked if he does not win the job outright, and is their kicker this season. I have worked with numerous professional athletes, and I can vouch for Nick’s work ethic – he kicks and works out every single day. I am glad to see it paying off.
I want to give a shoutout to my client Joe. Want to talk about lean? In 6 weeks he has gone from 13.4% bodyfat down to an absolutely chisled 7.4% – insane abs and one of the pound for pound strongest clients I have – just an obvious example of what focus can achieve.
The mind is the most limiting factor – it is UP TO YOU!

San Antonio Personal Trainer Update/Random
Hey San Antonio,
Will we ever get a break from this heat? This is going to be kind of a random posting with no real train of thought – just had a few questions from readers that I thought I would answer!
Business Related
-I am running my two for one personal training special right now (two people train together for the price of one. Call me at 210.391.1454 for details (or email me at boyd@the-personal-trainer.com)
-Since most people would prefer to text than call, YES, you can text me questions about my personal training service: 210.391.1454 :)
-Speaking of which, text the word FITNESSTRAINER to the number 90210 for my health, fitness and fat loss tips. Your number is safe, never sold, and you can opt out of my messages at any time.
Reader questions (some not related to actual training):
Boyd: have you watched that Ninja Challenge Show – what are your thoughts?
Haha, I had heard about it and my son and I actually watched a few hours of the marathon this weekend. It looked like fun and very challenging. I would love to see the actual huge obstacle course in Japan. I suppose I could find it on YouTube!
How is the bench press world record going?
I am actually doing better than I would have hoped to be doing right now. I have some vids coming out soon, but I am way ahead of schedule. My next huge goal is a 675 bench, and I have recently adjusted my goals to do that at a lighter weight than I actually benched 650lbs! For those who are new and haven’t been following, that is completely raw bench pressing, and I am currently after the raw world record of 715lbs.
Hey Boyd: From a fitness standpoint, who is your favorite athlete?
Hmm, good question. I am a huge football fan, but to be honest, many of those guys are genetic freaks and don’t have an insane training regimen. Based on what I know about specific athletes and their training, I would have to say that UFC Fighter Georges St Pierre is the most impressive. The guy does a little bit of everything and is in incredible shape.

He is pushing his workout videos now, and I doubt he does any of that that is in the vids. He is very meticulous with his diet and his old workout vids, (weights, plyometrics, etc) were pretty impressive.
Whatever it takes!

Back To School, Back In Shape!!!
Wow, Summer 2011 has been quite brutal, but it has almost come and gone, and now the kids are down to their last week of school. Are you ready to be rewarded for your Summer of patience?
The holidays will be here before you know it, however, there is still PLENTY of time to make a total body transformation while learning how to keep momentum through the holidays (wow, I can’t believe I’m already referencing the holidays, but don’t blink, they’ll be here soon enough). It’s now mid-August – how would you like to look and feel radically different when you visit family and friends at the end of November/December? Or have all of your friends asking you “WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU DOING?” in October?
You can drastically change before Autumn is here!
Don’t put it off any longer. The first step is the hardest, but once you start moving, building momentum comes naturally and a new wardrobe for Christmas will seem like a phenomenal idea (and a very realistic goal).
Live stronger, live leaner, live better – the “best shape of your life” is not a thing of the past, it will be your holiday present! Get ready to work for it!!!
During the next couple of weeks, we will be offering discounts on one on one personal training programs (Up to 20% off of packages) and “bring a friend” specials (two people train together for the price of one) – if you have been thinking about beginning our exercise program, now is the time to do it with your own custom training program, not a made for the masses workout like CrossFit or P90X!
Do not settle for a cookie-cutter workout or just going through the motions: I will help you get into the best shape of your life, no matter your current condition!
For other back to school personal training specials, contact me at 210.391.1454 or email me at boyd@the-personal-trainer.com, or text the message BOYD to the number 90210 for more information.

113 Days and Counting!!!
Hey everyone,
I want to take a few seconds and congratulate Rachel S. on her decision to compete in the NPC Texas State Natural Bodybuilding/Bikini Championships on November 19, 2011 in Austin, TX. She took the first step on her journey today and I cannot wait to post her progress pictures over the next 17+ weeks as she works her way into competition shape.
Competing is NOT easy: there is a reason why so few people do it. The amount of discipline, physical and psychological effort, and sacrifice that it requires is not for the weak-minded. On top of that, just reaching stage is not enough: WE fully intend on winning her division (I say “WE” because I will be with her every step of the way!).
I know, 113 days seems like an eternity, but in the blink of the eye, it will be half that, and then inside a month, and then prep week – and during the entire cycle, I fully intend on keeping the readers of this blog informed on her progress, all the way through comp night when she is holding her trophy on stage.
Get ready for Rachel, everyone!

What’s IN Versus What WORKS
Hey San Antonio,
Somewhere along the line several years ago, I decided to walk away from corporate America and pursue a full time career in the biggest perpetuator of fad industry in the world, personal training.
I have been training others since 1996, and during that time, I have seen some pretty insane things come and go – I have seen many trainers, in an effort to lure clients in, have their trainees doing some pretty big time wasting, worthless movements.
Of course, the many group exercise classes, fad diets, and can’t miss supplements have come and gone as well: ONE THING REMAINS TRUE.
The science of changing the body is simple, but not easy. IT takes a lot of discipline and effort. More so, it takes the proper plan: if it were as simple as putting a bunch of movements together and breaking a sweat, a lot of people would look amazing. However, obesity is at an all time high.
I push people hard – harder than they have ever been pushed in their lives, and that scares many. The truth it, I never push them further than they can go – just far enough to help them get to where they really want to be. My clients response to my approach (both physical and verbal in appreciation) gives me reinforcement every day!
So if you want the gags and goofy gadgets or groups of people wearing matching outfits, I am not the personal trainer for you.
If you want to look better than you absolutely dreamed possible, then call me – 210.391.1454
